The festival will pay a tribute to the distinguished observational film makers Judith and David MacDougall. MacDougalls are key figures in the development of ethnographic cinema and visual anthropology. As filmmakers they have directed in Africa, Australia, India, China and Europe. Their body of work comprising of films directed together and separately have consistently pushed the boundaries of observational cinema. David also writes regularly on ethnographic and documentary films and, in his book, Transcultural Cinema (Princeton University Press, 1998) discusses central issues in the relation of film to ethnography. He was one of the founders of the Centre for Cross-Cultural Research at the Australian National University, where he is currently an Australian Research Fellow and Convener of the Programme in Visual Research. Judith is a visiting fellow at the Centre and has just finished a documentary on the effect of the Cultural Revolution in China on current photographic practices and how the digital revolution is changing how photography is used. David has been working for the past ten years in India on a series of ethnographic accounts of childhood in schools and juvenile institutions. His publications besides the book, Transcultural Cinema, include such journal articles as 'Beyond Observational Cinema', “'Ethnographic Film: Failure and Promise', “'Photo Hierarchicus: Signs and Mirrors in Indian Photography', and “'Social Aesthetics and The Doon School'”. A new book of essay, The Corporeal Image, has just been published by the Princeton University Press.
