Liberal Cults, Suicide Bombers, and other Theological Dilemmas

By

Stewart Motha

Abstract

In exploring the relation between death, subjectivity and politics, the paper interrogates the discourse of the liberal left and argues that suicide bombing initiates a crisis of meaning. This crisis deals with a thanatopolitics-the linking of death, sacrifice, martyrdom and politics- by which the suicide bomber emerges within the moral register of ‘evil’ relations between victim and perpetrator. The paper concludes by arguing that the old certitudes (if ever there were any) inaugurated by a monotheistic conception of the world cannot adequately explain the non-transcendental emergence of the universal.
