Abstract
This research paper examines public-generated wall art in two locations in Mumbai. Through semiotic analysis, I explore how ideas of ‘Indianness’, gendered violence and patriotism are communicated by way of image and text, highlighting how meaning resides in the palimpsestic – in the layers of paint, languages, the physical sites and cultural contexts in, and through which, the wall art resides.
