Academic Reading and Writing Course, 3rd Session

SOC 109:  ACADEMIC READING AND WRITING

Semester I, August–November 2019

CITATION AND REFERENCE STYLES

Since academic writing always requires referring to the work of numerous scholars and publications, you need to be familiar with the rules and conventions regarding how these references are to be presented.  This is an important aspect of academic writing – please ensure that you take care to follow the proper conventions.  Not doing so immediately marks out your work as lacking in care and invites the reader to form a low opinion of it.

In the social sciences, the most popular referencing style is that prescribed by the American Psychological Association, or APA.  This is the one we will be using for the most part.  Other popular academic referencing styles include The Chicago Manual of Style, the Harvard Style Manual and the Modern Language Association (MLA) Style Manual (mainly for the arts and humanities).  All of these style manuals can be easily accessed on the internet, and there are also other sites that will help with this process.

Please get a printout of the following documents and bring it to class on Tuesday, 3rd September.
